Oops! Astrologers Predict Barak Obama to Win Presidential Election in 2008!
Robert Hand Teaching in Sedona, Arizona – Photo by Eric Francis
Thanks to my reader Kira, who wrote to tell me of the astrologers’ conference picking Obama, I might not have known of my error! I reported the first news report from INPLACE News. All I can say is they are a new news service (from what I can see) that is NOT very reliable.
Apparently, there was actually a panel on stage of seven famous astrologers, who were asked to pick the winner of the 2008 presidential race in November.
According to columnist William Porter at the Denver Post,
“Six panelists predicted the election will go to Barack Obama, thanks to a Saturn-Jupiter conjunction spelling change. The seventh, Shelley Ackerman, saw an Obama win, but worried about Neptune doing something funky in January, endangering his chances of actually taking office. Her colleagues agreed the stars did look dicey in this respect.
Panelist Sandra-Leigh Serio ran it down for me.
“Obama’s chart and the United States’ chart are very much alike,” she said. “From an astrological standpoint, he’s a man of destiny. (John) McCain also has a strong connection to the U.S. chart.”
Hillary Clinton? Eh, not so much, apparently. “There’s a little more confusion with her and the U.S. chart,” Serio said.
And according to Valerie Richardson, of the Washington Times,
“He has the stability, along with the karmic destiny, to overturn the status quo,” said Edith Hathaway, an astrologer from Laguna Hills, Calif.
A panel of seven astrologers agreed that the passage of Saturn in opposition to Uranus, a phenomenon that begins on Election Day and last occurred 45 years ago, signifies social change, transformation and possibly upheaval.
As the self-described candidate of change, said astrologers, Mr. Obama of Illinois appears a more likely architect for transformation than New York’s Mrs. Clinton or presumptive Republican nominee Sen. John McCain of Arizona.
The pronouncement came as welcome news to the audience of several hundred astrologers. At the start of the event, a show of hands found about 80 percent of the audience supporting an Obama presidency.
At one point, New York astrologer Shelly Ackerman called Mr. McCain an “idiot” and Mr. Obama a “wonderful human being,” prompting moderator Raymond Merriman to comment on the “wonderful objectivity of astrologers.”
At the same time, astrologers warned that winning the presidency this year could be a mixed blessing. They said the January inauguration is scheduled for a particularly bad time, planetarily speaking, and urged officials to move the event back to 12:30 p.m.
“This isn’t a terribly fortunate chart in which to be inaugurated president,” said astrologer Robert Hand. “I’m enormously concerned about [Mr. Obama's] safety.”
Financial Astrologer Robert Merriman
Mr. Merriman forecasts possible trouble even before the inauguration. “With Saturn opposite Uranus on Election Day, the person elected on Election Day may not be the person who’s inaugurated in January,” he said.
Volatile planetary events in the next few months also signify possible shifts in the presumptive presidential nominee.
“There are things that could happen in the next couple of months that could change it from what we think it is right now,” Ms. Ackerman said.
Astrologer Robert Blaschke agreed, saying, “I think there’s a lot of unexpected things that are going to happen between now and the Democratic National Convention.”
More than 1,500 astrologers gathered at the Sheraton Hotel here for the United Astrology Conference, the largest such gathering in years.”
I hope these concerns about Obama’s chart don’t mean that something is going to happen to him. It remains to be seen who the vice-presidential nominee will be. Perhaps this year, that will turn out to be the most important question of all.

I don’t know what’s going to happen with regard to the dem nomination, all I know is my Tarot was very strong with its indication that Hillary will be our next president. And because of the very (very) positive cards I drew on this for her, I’d be stunned if that wasn’t the ultimate outcome. I’ve never known my cards to be that wrong on something that I was essentially neutral about.
I couldn’t get the Tarot to show me one positive card toward Obama being the next president, but there was nothing there that would make me believe he’ll be seriously harmed — but it did show some kind of trouble he’d be having, possibly something related to money. And another card that often represents sadness from being abandoned, maybe he’ll withdraw for some reason?? Hard to imagine that. I’ve never felt there was any likelihood that McCain would be the next president — I didn’t even ask my cards about him.
It intrigues me how the astrologers here are saying that things will change from what we think now. That might be a possible alignment with what my cards are saying. I think Hillary as president will represent/symbolize change — a female president, the first female president. That’s a HUGE change in a world that still sees women as second-class citizens, second even to a black MALE. And my Tarot says she will be a very good president, that’s definitely big change from what we’ve just had
Peace,
Dove

I’m not an astrologer,but i have a 100% prediction that it’s Obama’s
destiny to be the next king of the land.
Why? He was born under the sun sign of Leo and it represents Sun.
The same sign that President Bill Clinton has in his chart.
Most of the Leo signs were sucessful,if they will do the right thing.
Hillary is not and no indication in her sun sign that rule the leadership.
So many negatives and bad karmas surrounded her persona.
Mc Cain has no signs of being the next president either.
Very obvious if you look at the whole personality of the 3 candidates.
The eyes as the window of our soul.the aura whether it be dark or light.
The karma.whatever is in the mind of every psychic,it actually transfer
from one soul to another, especially a pure one.

dovelove is right, based on my horary analysis. I’ve cast several horaries over the past few months from a neutral, spiritual perspective–asking who can bring the most “Light” to a position of power. Hillary’s planets are always exalted; Obama consistently manifests as self-doing related to a sexual indiscretion ( lilith) matter. In fact, Lilith consistently presents herself conjunct the MC, which also spells (yikes)celebrity fraud. There’s a lot of Neptune surrounding Obama (smoke and mirror, rose-colored glasses). And while his significators appear conjunct a number of fixed stars that show political aptitude, this summer portends badly for his political ambitions. The public start to see him for his real beliefs/ motivations. Modern vedic astrology essentially shows the same pitfalls. (www.modernvedicastrology.com)

Yes lyn I agree that was my prediction also. He will be the next President of the United States . There is no scandal about him dont know where that is coming from. The Clintons had their time in the White house. They will not reside in there anymore. He really does want to help the American people. He will be apart of all our lives for a long time to come.
June 11, 2008 at 3:34 am
It should be remembered that the other unpredictable thing about these predictions is that neither of the charts for Obama or Clinton are reliably accurate (otherwise known as “dirty” among astrologers). That is something else all of the leading astrologers at the conference agreed on. That includes the new birth time for B. Obama that was introduced at the conference by someone claiming to have inside info.
So it seems that the unpredictable nature of Uranus is also impeding astrological election forecasts as well this year and next. That being said, it is still possible to gain insight into many of the planetary aspects affecting Obama & Clinton based on the birth DAY, even if the time is not known.

It is my pleasure to inform and enlighten people about Barack Obama’s birth chart. Obama has just ended all the conceptions about his birth time. Obama has posted his Birth certificate on his website. You can read it on the link below. His AC is at one degree of Capricorn.

John mccain deserves to win!! he has years and years of experience. he is NOT a repeat of Bush and if he decides to keep the troops in then its the right decision with his experience of being in a war! obama might win but it will be only because of u idiot democrats voted for him! he will ruin united states mark my words! you will all regret in the years to come if he wins because he is an inexperienced senator. he’s barely learned any of the requirements to be a president! the only downside of mccain is that he hasn’t shown you his aggressive side yet! my mother sat next to him on a plane flying from DC once (its true). you are all afraid to vote republican because you think it will be a repeat of bush and you just want a democrat to win. God do we need Ronald Reagan back right now! He was the best president, even most democrats agree to that. Restv in Peace, Reagan, RIP…

Vedic Astrology of India is perhaps the most accurate predictive system and yet perhaps least known/acknowledged in the western world. There are many schools of predictive techniques in Vedic Astrology like Parashara, Jaimini, KP, etc. It turns out that evaluating McaCain’s and Obama’s charts via Parashara, Jaimini and KP methods converges to pointing Obama as the victor on 11/4/2008. While every astrologer will provide his/her own reasons, according to me: McCain will be his own undoing. His campaign will run into great difficulty starting 10/7/2008 when Mars Anthara starts. On Nov 2 Mercury paryanthara starts and both Mars and Mercury are aspected by Saturn (in transit in Leo which is McCain’s 12th house of Loss). Mars and Mercury and Sun happen to be in Libra in Transit. Lord of Libra is Venus who is in McCain’s 12th house (of Loss) in Leo in his birth chart. Hence McCain will be undone by a woman (could be his wife, running mate or someone else) because Venus represents the preceding folks. It will be most likely self-undoing because he would have chosen them to help him.
There is also a strong indication that between Nov 17, 2008 to February 3, 2009, Obama could face great danger to his life. But Jupiter with Saturn in his first house is a great protective force for him and he will most likely come through fine if anything untoward were to happen.

WOW, what a prediction….this is extremely encouraging to me personally. Will be holding my breath to see how this plays out!
And if this works out, I’ll be waiting to do a blog post on YOU!

Ashley, I disagree with you strongly. Ronald Reagan’s various policies – economic, foreign, privatization, etc.. is why the US is now in so much trouble. Ronald Reagan created Osama Bin Laden. Ronald Reagan has stolen from the American people through privatization and endless war. Bush and McCain are using the same crooked, murderous thugs that Ronald Reagan used. The GOP is all about THUGS – Guns and Oil and Police State…..Kill, Kill, Kill…..Steal, Steal, Steal.
Ashely, you are living in a dreamworld. You drank the Cool-aid. You believe and live the lies.
September 23, 2008 at 6:18 pm
Didn’t anyone else spot this:
According to columnist William Porter at the Denver Post,
“Six panelists predicted the election will go to Barack Obama, thanks to a Saturn-Jupiter conjunction spelling change.
Check your Ephemeris, people. Jupiter and Saturn won’t be in a conjunction until late 2020! I’d expect Mr. Porter to make a mistake like that, but not the astrologers who should know better. Jupiter & Saturn are now in a trine aspect, which is not generally known for invoking change…which usually requires stressful aspects like squares and oppositions.
I also predict a win for Obama, but not based on an erroneous Jupiter-Saturn conjunction.
September 25, 2008 at 2:06 am
VedicVegan: I believe they meant transiting Jupiter will be conjunt Obama’s natal Saturn(and his natal Jupiter.) Transiting Saturn(while in opposition to transiting Uranus) will also be in trine to this conjunction on election day.
I predict a win for Obama as well.
September 28, 2008 at 10:33 am
You are correct about the Trine aspect in Transit. The reference probably confused Transit with the Jup-Sat conjunction in Capricorn in Obama’s vedic birth chart.
Transit Saturn in Leo is NOT good for both Obama and McCain. Leo is the 8th house for Obama and 12th house for McCain with respect to their ascendant signs at birth.
Fortunately, Obama is NOT running the Maha Dasa of Saturn, while unfortunately McCain IS running the Maha Dasa of Saturn. So Saturn’s transit position in Leo is far more unfavorable for McCain than it is for Obama.
One major problem that McCain’s chart has is that in transit on Nov. 4 – his birth Ascendant Virgo and its lord Mercury are BOTH BOXED-IN by malefics – Saturn in Leo on one side and Sun and Mars together in Libra on the other side. Saturn lords the 6th, Mars lords 3rd and 8th and Sun lords the 12th in McCain’s birth chart. Notice how the Ascendant Virgo and its Lord Mercury are BOTH BOXED in by planets ruling 3, 6, 8 and 12.
This situation of the Ascendant AND its Lord Mercury being completely surrounded by lords of 3, 6, 8 and 12 is usually indicative of failure.
On election day, Moon (exalted in Obama’s birth chart) transits Capricorn which is Obama’s Ascendant. This may be interpreted as a divine blessing for success and protection by his mother (in heaven) and the good karma of his past lives.
For Obama, Saturn in the 8th in Transit and Jupiter in the 12th is usually indicative of risks to health/life issues especially when Sun the lord of Leo is also simultaneously debilitated in Libra. Jupiter’s Trine Aspect in transit on Saturn is a great temporary savior. Around December 9, when Jupiter moves into Capricorn (debilitation), the Transit Trine aspect is Broken and the situation has potential for adverse happenings.

I only pray (as should everyone else on this planet) that Barack Obama will be the next President. I am into numerology and know how much this man is needed. Please visualize Obama being swarn into office. Peace & Blessings.
October 10, 2008 at 1:54 pm
I predict a McCain-Palin win due mainly to the “Bradley Effect” in which polls will have Obama ahead by 4 points but he loses the elction because of racists polling for him but voting for the “white guy” at the end. I predict that about 6 to 9 million Hillary supporters will come out the shadows in Ohio and Pensylvania giving the election to McCain even with the economioc crisis. McCain wins by narrow margin. This kind of “error polling” has happened in the past with Carter-Reagan and Gore-Bush. Watch how at the end of the night of 4 November(11 PM) the world will hear that America has its first WOMAN VICE PRESIDENT.
October 16, 2008 at 4:27 pm
For people that do what you all do, it seems to be you should know better then to put things out there about Obama not serving…we all know what you mean, and so do the lunatics who come out to here McCain call Obama a terrorist.
Then he backs off and says he’s “not an Arab, but a family man” like those two things are mutually exclusive….and he is so stupid he doesn’t even know he’s just insulted every Arab on the planet. And that woman he was talking to, when he did his turnaround, the one who was afraid of Obama because he has her convinced he’s a terrorist, is crying…and McCain is NODDING IN AGREEMENT with her, but the words he says are the ones I just wrote….he’s a hoodlum, like the rest of the neocons.
And Palin? Don’t even get me started. I am saddened at the stupidity of our country…the one issue voters who haven’t a clue as to what the Bush adminsitration has done to this once great country. There is almost nothing left of our civil rights and the neocons are screaming ‘kill him” with regard to Obama and NO ONE IS ARRESTING THESE PEOPLE. Because the law enforcement agrees with her.
It’s pathetic. Goodbye America, it was nice while it lasted. And when the neocons finally wake up…if in fact, they ever do, they will be scratching their empty heads wondering what went wrong, when. It went wrong when Bush STOLE the last two elections. And now, the right is up in arms about election fraud. Funny, they didn’t raise objections when it was turned around last time!!
October 19, 2008 at 8:56 am
Well, if we’re looking at real change, and from a funky perspective of upheaval, then it would make more sense that McCain is elected, and then something happens and Palin becomes the president. She is after all an Aquarius, and the US has had more Aquarius presidents than any other sign. Also, the Saturn (planet ruled by men and authority figures, but also the old ruler of Aquarius) opposition Uranus (planet ruled by unpredictability and her now ruling planet) would seem to be working in her favor by pushing men out of the way (the old male dominated society) and ushering in a new breath. From a remote viewing standpoint I actually see her becoming the next president of the United States. I actually see her sitting in the Oval Office as plain as day.
October 20, 2008 at 9:05 am
Greetings!
I agree with Bluzulu, Carmelo and Ashley completely! It’s absolutely going to be McCain-Palin for the WIN!
October 23, 2008 at 6:34 am
I 100% agree with Carmelo. McCain/Palin will win due to the ‘Bradley Effect’. But, that will only be part of the story. There is an undercurrent in this country of people who are disgusted and fed up with the media. In their attempt to get Obama elected, they may have done him in. If Obama wins, you can thank the media. Obama has had a free ride. God help this country if he wins. He is the most unqualified candidate this country has ever had in an election. Everything from papers he wrote in college to the frightening associates he paled around with have been carefully hidden and covered up by the media. Democrats, I ask you. What do you really know about him? Yeh, he’s a great orator and has a formidable ’speaking’ voice (compared to Bush). And, he does a great job of memorizing facts, the way a student does in college. Take all that away, and I ask you again, what do you really know about this man? What has he ever done that makes him qualifed to be President? I challenge you to come up with a good reason explaining why he should even be running! I could care less what color he is. He could be ‘purple’. He just plain isn’t qualified.
October 29, 2008 at 2:38 pm
Yes, just what we need Obama as president. Sorry, but I don’t want a Sun square Neptune president. He is promising but cannot and will not deliver on his promises. I believe his Leo Sun loves the power and prestige it will bring him (and the money) but little more can be expected. I’m a Virgo with a lot of Leo in my chart and I sell. Obama is a great salesperson, but has little substance/experience.
October 31, 2008 at 2:22 am
Reading is a good way to get information. Obama has written a number of books. I’ve read the Audacity of Hope. It is full of substance and experience. I see his biggest strength is the ability to bring together people who are in conflict and get them talking and relating. He has been doing this for a long time. Also, he looks for what people have in common, not what they don’t have in common. His substance is wide reaching — check out his books.

If you want to see an interesting indepth astrological analogy as to why McCain will win the election then go to the following website. Although Madam Lichtenstein predicts an Obama win…..a comment by Duse gives compelling arguments for the opposite to be true. Duse’s comments begin on Oct. 26, 2008 and goes all the way down to the end of the page. His is the most complete analysis for an argument one way or the other that I’ve seen on the internet.

Linda, I also don’t want a nice man like Obama to struggle cleaning up the Republican mess. I think the economy will stink for the next few years and who better than McSame/Clueless to make it stink even more? Humans have evolved by learning from past experience. If we didn’t learn anything from the past 8 years…then we deserve more of the McSame…
November 3, 2008 at 10:58 am
I predict John McCain will win. All that neptune around obama is creating a gloss..McCain has intellect (virgo) ability, experience and balance. He has good aspects with the US chart. Unfortunately, if Obama is “elected”, when the gloss wears off, his life will probably be in danger. It is very sad but true.
November 4, 2008 at 5:04 pm
Yesterday Obama’s grandmother Madelyn past away. She lived past a recent birthday and then dies the day before the election. Now I think this is very strange and odd. Then there is a cresent moon and star on election day. Is this a bad Omen? If anything it will be good luck for all of the Arab countries. They will be celebrating late today after the polls close. Over seas campaign contrabutions, was money well spent on electing Obama. That’s right our enemies helped elect Obama. America has been bought. This could be the beginning of the end for America as we know it. Change is coming. This is a sad day for all.
November 4, 2008 at 10:09 pm
I also predict John McCain will win.
My common sense & the MSM tells me Obama will win tonight, but McCain has the strong transiting Saturn aspects that I use for predicting elections.
When I look at Obama’s transits …….boring.
MCain’s …President

Thanks

I saved Parama Sishya’s reading from early September and am impressed. I live in the netehrlands, and people here are thrilled with the Obama outcome
November 8, 2008 at 9:55 am
The Principles of Vedic Astrology of India appear to have worked very well in this case. Specifically, there were 5 predictions:
1) Obama will win
2) McCain will be the cause of his own undoing
3) McCain will be brought down by a woman
4) After 10/7/2009 everything will go downhill for McCain’s campaign
5) By Nov. 2 things will only become worse for McCain (Embarrassment by the Montreal Radio Station Call, Arizona coming into play, etc.)
While I would have been a proud American regardless of the outcome, Obama’s victory is an infexion point in World History. I am personally delighted to see that “Merit” took precedence over ” Prejudice”, giving all of us in America a great opportunity to regain our lost respect, and once again become an admired economy with positive Global influence.
I continue to be concerned about the period from Dec. 9, 2009 onwards till inauguration day. The transit of Jupiter into Capricorn (sign of debilitation of Jupiter) causes me significant anxiety. I have decided to hold my thoughts on this one till I can bring myself to read Obama’s chart again. I am not an Astrologer, just a student only.

Parama Sishya you are very good, I hope that all what you see for Obama its not all bad, I really hope that Obama will become president and that he will be OK.
I think prayers are required here.
I am a Canadian living in Europe, everyone here is very happy with the outcome, people have a renewed hope for the world. Americans have shown to the world that they are not so bad after all. If you think that Americans were viewed as Heros by the world, quiet the contrary I am afraid. This last event has changed many views (My guess is that even those of the most radical groups,). Should anything happen to Obama, we will be back to square one, and go into a much worse economic disaster period for the entire world. I really hope that whoever is not happy with Obama’s election that they give him a chance and let him do what he came to this world for.
Once in a while there is an angel that comes to earth to change the world and set it in the right direction, this time we have Obama. Give him a chance.
November 10, 2008 at 11:03 am
Hey you guys, you’re talking about some harm coming to Obama but he’s going to survive it. That’s a prime sign of the anti-Christ. I don’t know what you’re reading in the charts but I see a man who is a chameleon; someone who will say anything and do anything to get elected. He has the ability to lie right to your face. And he has a cold heart. Just ask his constituents in Chicago when he was a State Senator of Il. Those poor people couldn’t hope for heat in the Resko owned slums but he managed to enrich the slum lord and himself at their expense. What makes all you idiots think he’s gonna give a crap about you?
Besides the fact that he’s a low class common criminal, he’s also embarrassingly ignorant. His latest Seal states – The President Elect. I know we’re living in the ‘Age of the Lowlife” but are the majority of Americans so stupid that they don’t even know that there is no such thing? Hasn’t anyone told this boob that he’s not officially the president until the Electoral College meets and he takes the Oath of Office? That, and the presidential coin, when there has been nothing achieved to warrant it (unless he considers the color of his skin an achievement); selling tickets for his inauguration (shows an extreme disrespect for the office of president and a con artist’s ploy to make money); and the most undignified gait outside a prison – a regular arrogant ghetto strut; show’s on a subliminal lever how unprepared this narcissist is for the office he’s about to take.
I have a prediction of my own. By this time next year all of you are going to hate this man who is going to make your lives miserable. And I’m willing to bet half of you won’t even still be on this earth thanks to him too.
November 10, 2008 at 11:41 am
Obama’s not going to become president because he’s going to be proven to be ineligible to be president.
SCOTUS Tells Obama To Produce Birth Certificate
Lawyer Philip Berg’s lawsuit questioning Barack Obama’s “natural born” status has entered a do-or-die phase after the Supreme Court has ordered the president-elect to produce his birth certificate by December 1st.
Berg, who appealed his case to America’s highest court, was told by Justice David Souter’s Clerk that his petition for an injunction to stay the November 4th election was denied. The Clerk also required the defendants (Obama, the DNC, and FEC) to respond to the Writ of Certiorari by December 1. At that time, Obama must present an authentic birth certificate to the Court, which has been sealed by Hawaii governor Linda Lingle. Berg will get to respond afterwards.
Failure to do that will surely inspire the skepticism of the Justices in Obama, who are not used to being defied. The Court will have to decide what to do about a president-elect who refuses to prove his natural-born citizenship.
“I can see a unanimous Court (en banc) decertifying the election if Obama refuses to produce his birth certificate,” says attorney and writer Raymond S. Kraft. “They cannot do otherwise without abandoning all credibility as guardians of the Constitution. Even the most liberal justices, however loathe they may to do this, still consider themselves guardians of the Constitution. The Court is very jealous of its power – even over presidents, even over presidents-elect.”
Obama’s own campaign website has stated the president-elect was a Kenyan citizen until 1982. Audio of Obama’s Kenyan grandmother saying he was born in Kenya has recently surfaced.
On December 13, the Electoral College meets to casts its votes. If it has been determined that Mr. Obama is an illegal alien and therefore ineligible to become President of the United States, the Electors will be duty-bound to honor the Constitution. http://therightperspective.com/wordpress/?p=311

Well, Amanda, I guess we will see about that on December 13 then. I wasn’t even aware that the votes had not already all been cast.

Well Margot, That is the law. He is not president until the electorate votes. Personally I think that he is a fraud. When I look at his chart I do not see one of a leader. Saturn and Jupiter in 12th. I don’t like Saturn in 12 for anyone. Also Neptune is the planet that is elevated. Yep, sounds like a fraud who deludes people.

Jo, I agree with you, we should give Obama a chance to be president for the next four years and we’ll see what happens! But! I disagree with you about the idea that Obama is an angel! You’re living in Mayaland, (the land of illusions)! He’s a man with all his qualities and faults just like all of us. Get real….Obama is not a panacea for what is wrong in the States and the world!!!

The reason i was thinking he was an angel was because I saw a documentary about people who knew him and worked with him to help others. What Latisha is saying was completely unknown to me, i am now worried about what we will have to go throw in he next years, what is totally unreal is how Bush was elected twice after knowing the kind of man he was.
I really pray that things will get better for all of us.

Here’s an article from the New York Times on November 20, 2008 about the Electoral College vote on December 15, 2008.

Flunking the Electoral College
Published: November 19, 2008
On Dec. 15, the United States will endure a quadrennial ritual born in the economics and politics of slavery and the quill-pen era. Members of the Electoral College are scheduled to meet in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia to formally choose the next president.

Times Topics: Electoral CollegeReaders’ Comments
“The founders were so mistaken on slaves, women, Native Americans, appointment of senators…that retaining the equally wrong Electoral College … is simply stubborn.”
Dave D., Wisconsin
Read Full Comment »There is no real doubt about how the electors will vote, but it is disturbing that they have any role at all in making this vital choice in the 21st century. The Electoral College is more than just an antiquated institution: it actively disenfranchises voters and occasionally (think 2000) makes the candidate with fewer popular votes president. American democracy would be far stronger without it.
There is no reason to feel sentimental about the Electoral College. One of the main reasons the founders created it was slavery. The southern states liked the fact that their slaves, who would be excluded from a direct vote, would be counted — as three-fifths of a white person — when Electoral College votes were apportioned.
The founders also were concerned, in the day of the wooden printing press, that voters would not have enough information to choose among presidential candidates. It was believed that it would be easier for them to vote for local officials, whom they knew more about, to be electors. It is hard to imagine that significant numbers of voters thought they did not know enough about Barack Obama and John McCain by Election Day this year.
And, while these reasons for the Electoral College have lost all relevance, its disadvantages loom ever larger. To start, the system excludes many voters from a meaningful role in presidential elections. If you live in New York or Texas, for example, it is generally a foregone conclusion which party will win your state’s electoral votes, so your vote has less meaning — and it can feel especially meaningless if you vote on the losing side. On the other hand, if you live in Florida or Ohio, where the outcome is less clear, your vote has a greatly magnified importance.
Voters in small states are favored because Electoral College votes are based on the number of senators and representatives a state has. Wyoming’s roughly 500,000 people get three electoral votes. California, which has about 70 times Wyoming’s population, gets only 55 electoral votes.
The Electoral College also makes America seem more divided along blue-red lines than it actually is. If you look at an Electoral College map, California appears solidly blue and Alabama solidly red. But if you look at a map of the popular votes, you see a more nuanced picture. More than 4.5 million Californians voted for Mr. McCain (roughly as many votes as he got in Texas), while about 40 percent of voters in Alabama cast a ballot for Mr. Obama.
One of the biggest problems with the Electoral College, of course, is that three times since the Civil War — most recently, with George W. Bush in 2000 — it has awarded the presidency to the loser of the popular vote. The president should be the candidate who wins the votes of the most Americans.
The best way to abolish the Electoral College is to amend the Constitution. Until that happens, a national popular vote movement is working to get states representing a majority of the electoral votes to agree to award their votes to the candidate who has the most votes nationally. That would effectively end the Electoral College. Several states, including New Jersey and Illinois, have already enacted popular vote laws, and others are considering it.
When the 2012 presidential election approaches, efforts to reform the electoral system will be viewed through a partisan prism, with a focus on which party they would help or hurt. With the next election still four years away, now is an ideal time to get serious about abolishing the Electoral College.

Heh, well, it seems glaringly obvious to me that the reason the charts are so “dirty” or inaccurate concerning our Komrade, Sir 0bama the exalted, is because he was, according to both the Kenyan ambassador and his paternal grandmother whom witnessed his birth, born at the Coast Hospital in Mombasa, Coast Province, Kenya. I believe that if you re-run your charts with that as his birthplace, it will probably clear things up a bit and provide a more accurate assessment of his life. However, for those of us who simply take a step back and take the time to really listen to what he is saying and doing, it’s not hard to predict where his administration is going and what the outcome will be. We’ve seen it all before… FDR… Woodrow Wilson… Fidel Castro…. Adolph Hitler….. Joseph Stalin……
