My First Tea Leaf INTERPRETATION, Second Attempt at Tea-Leaf Reading
OK, since my last attempt at tea-leaf reading, I’ve found a Chinese rice bowl (recommended by one site if you don’t have a cup with sloping sides) I had packed away, to use instead of a straight-sided teacup, or my grandmother’s special cups.
Instead of only trying to fit my notes from the reading on one page, I opened my “Tea-Leaf Reading Notebook” and used a spread of two pages. I drew three horizontal sections on the page, leaving spaces of about five centimeters (2.5 inches for my U.S. readers). This was to have more space to draw quick sketches and have plenty of space to note down what the sketches are, and in another color ink, what I think they mean.
Pictures, numbers, or letters can appear right-side-up, upside-down, or sideways (according to tea-leaf readers with experience. The cup shows about a month out, on a general reading. The rim third of the cup shows the first week, the middle band shows the second week, and the bottom band the third week. The bottom shows the fourth week. These were the assumptions I picked as I made my tea. This time, I’m using some loose-leaf Earl Grey (Earl Gray being my favorite tea). I’m still not quite sure how much to use. It seems that last time I didn’t have enough, and this time, I may have had too much. I used a large rounded teaspoon, not quite heaping. Next time, I think I’ll use a flat teaspoon. Readers, if you know more about making tea than I do, please help me here with your suggestions!
I only ended up having one other problem, which I’ll have to research what to do about it. A rice bowl doesn’t have a handle. When reading, according to the readers, you swirl it three times when there is just a teaspoon or so of liquid left in the bottom, and this gets the leaves up on the sides in patterns. Then you hold the handle at the 12:00 position to start reading. I gather that on the rim, 12:01 to 11:59 represents the first week, and so forth for the second and third weeks with the other bands. So, since I had no handle, and forgot to notice how I was holding the cup while swirling, I just took my best guess which side to presume was the 12:00 position. I’ll have to look this up, or check with some people on line to resolve this problem before next time.
So, with my notebook ready, I noted down sketches, positions, and notes about pictures. I turned the cup every direction, and I tried to see pictures as if it were a Rorschach Ink Blot Test (yes, I had to look up that spelling of Rorschach on-line!). When I couldn’t imagine any pictures in the leaves, I gently squinted my eyes to see if something might appear. At the end, I referred to my lists (printed off the internet sites) of what the interpretations of various pictures usually are. My lists weren’t too helpful, because most of my pictures/symbols don’t seem to be in the lists. So, I tried to “free-associate” and “let intuition come to guide me” about what the rest of the pictures might mean. So, I’m noting below my interpretations, (in order from early in each week to later in same week).
I’ll update this entry in the comments section as the weeks go on, to let people know if any of these interpretations work out, or not.
First, here is an example of a picture that can be seen in a cup, so you’ll know what kinds of things I was looking for:

The Symbols I Saw, and My First Attempt at Interpretation
I did this reading and made my notes Sunday night, then wrote up these interpretations Monday morning.
Week 1:
A black schnauzer dog, at 12:00. My lists indicate a good friend, OR someone born in the year of the dog. At this position, I’m guessing that pretty much indicates NOW. I did just spend the afternoon and early evening with my best friend. I sent her an e-mail to ask what year she was born. OK, I just heard back from her, and it turns out she was born in the year of the Ox. I think it still means her, though, because of the position in the cup, and that we just spent time together.
The country of Japan, at 1:00. Japan is not in any of the symbol lists. I’m assuming this position means today, Monday. Does this mean that someone from Japan will start reading my blog today? I hope so!!!
A capital “M,” at 3:00. I think this refers to me, Margot, and my blog. (I hope it means my readership is increasing and that people are enjoying my blog.)
A REALLY GIANT scorpion, spanning weeks one AND two in the cup, at 8:00. Scorpions are not in any of my lists. But I’m assuming this means a REALLY BIG DANGER of some kind. I’m wondering if we’re going to have a confrontation with firing our maid. Maids are getting much more difficult to find now, and their prices are starting to get unaffordable also. (I’m going to write a whole post on this very soon for my readers.) But we found a new live-in maid through a friend who has been with us about two weeks. She is pretty hopeless. She’s in her mid-20’s and does almost nothing. It took her five hours to clean the bathroom, and I had to take her back in to keep cleaning about fourteen times (no exaggeration). Meanwhile, she kept sneaking off to go to sleep, instead of finishing the job! ALL of her work is like this. But my parents hired her (I live upstairs in my parents’ villa) and they are on vacation with my little sister and grandparents at the beach, while I’m working and looking after the house and new maid. The day my parents left, they left a bit of cash with me, and before I could even put it away properly, I found a 100-dirham note had been lifted out (about ten Euros or fifteen U.S. dollars). I called my father that same night, but he said not to confront her. My parents are returning tomorrow night, so probably this maid will be fired soon. I’M WONDERING IF THAT’S WHAT THIS GIANT SCORPION IS REALLY ALL ABOUT!!! Are we going to have some kind of a BIG, dangerous confrontation mid-week?
A microscope, at 10:00. Microscopes are not in any of the symbols lists. Am I going to be doing some kind of scientific study or investigation around Saturday morning?
A man, carrying a huge bundle of sticks on his back (the microscope when viewed from another direction,) at 10:00. When my parents come back there are some things that need to be fixed in our house that will require workmen coming. Could this refer to workmen doing a lot of work? Or could it refer to if we fire the maid, that my little sister (age 13) and I will have to be doing a lot more work again (making less time for my blog)?
Week 2:
A small scorpion, at 3:00. A danger, sometime around Tuesday morning, but relatively small compared to the giant scorpion!
A girl dancing, at 6:00. The experts say that people pictures should be interpreted by what they are doing. I think this is my little sister, who’s happy about something!
Week 3:
nothing
Week 4 (Bottom of Cup): (Being as there was nothing for week three, I’m not sure if the following actually refers to week 3, instead of a fourth week, so we’ll just have to see how it works out, and then I’ll comment on what I find out.)
A small mermaid, just before 3:00. My list says, “Misfortune, especially to sea-faring persons.” I don’t think I’m going on any boats any time soon but I guess we’ll just have to see what turns up, won’t we?
Two giant empty eyes, surrounded by either a GIANT bearded face (covering the entire bottom of the cup), or a MASKED face (like a ski mask) covering the entire bottom of the cup, upright at 3:00. WOW, I can’t imagine what a giant bearded face would mean. My notebook list says about a face: “Look for nearby initials for identity of face; if near the rim, or handle, it is a warning against too much introspection; if facing another symbol, indicates importance of that symbol.” About eye, my book says, “a protective symbol; insight into a long-standing problem.” While there is nothing about beards in my lists, I did find mask. One list says, “A secret to be kept.” So here are some thoughts of mine. A BIG mask might mean a BIG secret to be kept. (Now I’m a little worried.) The only letter in the cup was an “M,” which I believe referred to me. So, might this mean that the big eyes will give me BIG insight into a BIG long-standing problem (or BIG, long-standing secret? I don’t think we have any secrets this big in our family…….could it be a job problem, or a secret at the bank??? We’ll see…..) Maybe it will mean that whatever the problem/secret that I shouldn’t worry about getting too introspective about it? Well, watch the comments to this post for updates about what happens with this……
A large coconut palm tree, laden with coconuts, planted in lots of deep, rich soil, upright at 6:00. While coconut palms, coconuts, and palms are not in any of my lists, I did find tree. One list said, “A lucky sign of prosperity and happiness,” while the other list said, “Wealth and beach vacation!” Those sound pretty good. So even if there is some deep secret or problem to be revealed, I can forget about it and enjoy myself at the beach? Stay tuned in the comments for updates……
(End of Reading)
All right readers, PLEASE, I need your HELP. Have any of you ever been to a tea-leaf or coffee-grounds reader? (I guess reading coffee grounds is pretty much the same idea, and it’s done a lot in places like Turkey.) What was your experience like? Was it at all like this reading? Did anything pan out from the reading? I’ve never had a chance to go to anyone like that, so I’m all on my own, looking for friends and resources on the net to develop any latent intuitive powers I might have (which I think everyone has, it’s just a matter of training and practice). If anyone reading knows anything about these arts (or even if you don’t), I’d love to have anyone’s feedback or reactions on this reading.
I just had another thought. Wouldn’t it be fun to have a supply of fortune cookies on hand to eat while doing tea-leaf readings? Would that appeal to you? If I were a client, I would love it. It would be a great activity just with friends, too!
Thanks!
Margot

Hi Margot,
I saw your post on wolfpaww and wanted to take a look. I did, and i have to say i added your side to my favorites!!!! Really good looking side with a lot off great information!!!! As for the picture of the cup with the leaves…. i see a heart, a unicorn and my daughter said she sees a butterfly (wich i think looks more like an M).
as for the problem with the knowing about the 12:00 o`clock possition? Maybe you could put a little sticker on the outside of the rice bowl? Or jsut mark it with a waterproof marker on the out side.
I myselve have never seen anyone do a thee leave reading, but you have got me curious about it thou. Maybe i will have one soon.
Good luck with your side.

I am going to have to learn tea leaf reading – my problem is that I love my formed tea Kokeicha from http://www.tealaden.com and it sits in the bottom of the cup and looks like pine needles. I will have to find another tea to learn with. I have checked out a few books on the subject but my imagination is not as vivid as yours – I just see tea leaves at the bottom of the cup.

Margot, it is best not to read your own tea leaves, you are not removed enough from any situation to understand the answers.
Also, if you will read for others, you will catch on much faster. And, remember, a dog may just be a dog. I never use the “meanings” and never have. Intuition will carry you through the reading if you just practice.
Namaste,

I know next to nothing about ready tea leaves, but you seem to have a firm grasp on what you are trying to do. You are headed in the right direction, and with the tips from Dee and others I’ll bet you’ll do great.

OK, so here are some results about the accuracy of the reading.
Japan–yes, I did get a reader from Japan on my another blog I write.
In the first week, the REALLY GIANT scorpion turned out not to be a scorpion at all, but a big RUBBER TREE. All of our drains had gotten blocked. They had to punch holes through our concrete floor, only to find that a rubber tree outside (mature, and three stories high) had grown roots all the way under the house into the drainage system. Men had to lie on the floor with big, long knives to hack out tree branches as far as they could reach. Then the tree had to come down. We were all upset about it, but once the tree was down, we found our house looked better with more light coming in! Looking back in my tea leaf journal, I found that my drawing was SO clearly the large rubber tree, even including the long roots drawn from he bottom! It was just that when I first saw it, I couldn’t imagine what it might be other than a scorpion.
The microscope did, indeed, turn out to be accurate, as I was doing some scientific investigations into whether taking the tree down was the right course of action, and investigating how rubber tree roots grow, and what kills them.
In the second week, the little girl dancing turned out not to be my little sister, but a little girl cousin of three years old who came to stay with us for two days. She has a happy personality, likes to laugh, and tell everyone lots of funny jokes. She also loves to dance.
After the tree and tree root problem were taken care of, we’ve had a lot of workmen in the house. These workmen have been repainting several rooms, that we’re trying to do while my Dad and I are on vacation (he’s an accountant), and before my little sister starts back to school. The man carrying sticks could be the heavy burden my Dad is under now, supervising all of these workmen.
Margot
Nothing’s happened yet with the big masked, or bearded face at the bottom of the cup. Maybe that refers how all the work in the house is going to turn out.

What kind of tea do you use?
I would really like to start reading but am just not sure what type of tea would be good for this.

I always use my very favorite, which is loose-leaf Earl Grey.
